Quantum Crushes Record
Quantum dots are making a comeback!
After a few years of humbled excitement over quantum dots there comes a record breaking performance in speed of light emissions. What the researchers did was construct a plasmonic metal structure with certain characteristics that the quantum dots could be embedded into. The total speed that they achieved was 90GHz or the equivalent of turning a light on and off 90 billion times in a second, where the previous record holding laser diodes performed at 25-50 GHz.
With the end-goal being optical electronics (aka opto-electronics) we are still a ways off, but this realization provides a large stride in the abilities of quantum dots and making a future of even faster electronics possible.
